3 weeks in…

 | July 12, 2009 21:57

3 weeks in, and I’m still enjoying the iPhone.

The things that seemed to be missing, are either not important, or are worked around really easily.

Apart from the nice interface, pretty much expected from Apple, the apps are what really expand the functionality of the phone and complete it.

My favourite is Prowl. Whilst the Growl plugin makes it easy to get your Mac to send notifications via push, the exciting bit about Prowl for me, is the ability to use a command line tool written in Perl to send custom push notifications.

Now, mail to my domain goes to Google Apps, which I pick up on the iPhone via IMAP, but because my exim server processes the mail first, I can get mail of interest notified by push.

Air Sharing allows me to store documents directly on my phone, and open and read them. Useful.

Lastly, Evernote has an iPhone app, and so I can take a picture of a handwritten note, and not only is it stored, but the text is indexed so I can search it.

All things considered, with the apps, email and calendar on the fly, its everything I need.

Now I’m just waiting to see how many arms and legs TomTom will want….

Missing Features…

I couldn’t resist.

I’ve been waiting for a long while for Apple to put 32 gig in an iPhone. I wanted to combine my phone and my iPod and just carry one item.

So, despite saying I’d wait, I could help myself, and Saturday saw me get my PAC from TMobile (I’d stay, but they don’t have the iPhone) and a shiney new 32 gig 3G S is now mine.

A few things already to note. I like it. I like it a lot. It combines a load of things I want into one device. But it has a few basic things missing that I’m hunting for work-arounds for (yes, still)…..

  • SMS delivery notification
    • EDIT: This can be done by prefixing each and every SMS with *0# — not ideal, but workable.
  • How to change divert on unanswered/busy etc
    • EDIT: This can be done by entering **61*901*11*30# [SEND] where:
      • 61 is unanswered calls divert (62 is unavailable, 67 is busy)
      • 901 is O2 voicemail
      • 11 is voice (rather than data or fax)
      • 30 is the number of seconds (increments of 5, maximum of 30)
      • More here
  • How to change how many rings before divert on unanswered

…and they’re just the ones I found so far…

On the whole though, I’m happy with my purchase.
